How we enhance environmental awareness in Perth

We can’t talk about sustainability without talking about the construction, operation and expansion of the Binningup Desalination Plant in Perth, Australia.

You might be wondering why this project is such a great example of sustainability. There are a number of good reasons, but first is the first. Let’s start talking about its construction. During this phase we used non-invasive marine technologies (with water intake pipes and discharge through tunnels), architectural and landscape integration plans, and we made sure to monitor and control the marine and terrestrial species that were present (possums’ corridor). But this Desalination Plant didn’t only comprise sustainability measures at this construction stage: it also constitutes an example of sustainability, tackling the carbon footprint during the operational phase. The facility is powered by renewable energy from Mumbida Wind Farm (55 MW) and the Greenough Solar Farm (80 ha of solar energy, yielding 10 MW) and has a strict policy of not using any chemical products during pretreatment.

With this 360º sustainable project and the amazing talent behind it we are proud to serve communities with something as essential as clean drinking water. The desalination plant covers 17% of Perth's water demand, while we are enhancing local talent and environmental awareness in the community.

We work hard to build better communities wherever we go, delivering infrastructure that efficiently meet the needs and expectations of their communities. Amongst many other recognitions, we are proud to have received the Desalination Plant of the Year award at the Global Water Awards in 2012 and to have been selected by KPMG as one of the 100 most innovative infrastructure projects globally. Guess hard work is rewarded after all!
