Sacyr Concesiones
From the beginning, we planned the project as an infrastructure capable of integrating clinical innovation, environmental sustainability and a people-centred way of working.
This vision has been materialised through a construction process design with respect for the environment and the wellbeing of patients, families, and hospital staff. The new centre, located in a protected area of high ecological value, prioritises low environmental-impact solutions, the use of natural resources and minimal intervention on the land, while incorporating measures to protect biodiversity. At the same time, we have integrated criteria related to innovation, culture and social commitment to generate a positive impact on patient experience, local community and the people who are part of the team.
This holistic approach has been recognised since the pre-construction phase, with awards from different fields that highlight both technical excellence and the way the infrastructure has been conceived and delivered. Among them, the most notable are:
• Future Healthcare Project Award – Overall Winner, European Healthcare Awards 2023
• Best Healthcare Project, Public Private Partnerships Awards 2025
• Culture & Diversity Award, Public Private Partnerships Awards 2026
• CCS National Site Awards – winner 2026
• Best Places to Work, The Sunday Times 2024
• New Employer Partner of the Year, ACT & ALS Training Awards 2026
• Finalist - Best New Development, MIPIM Awards 2026
• Nominated - Community Impact Award, Women’s Awards Wales 2026
• Shortlisted - Social Impact Excellence, Constructing Excellence Wales Awards 2026
The diversity and nature of these awards reflect the cross-cutting character of New Velindre Cancer Centre and its ability to generate more value beyond the infrastructure itself, demonstrating that large-scale projects can successfully integrate innovation, sustainability and social commitment from the outset.
