Sacyr Concesiones
We connect people through our transportation P3s always taking care of their safety. That is why on our highways it is fundamental that asphalt is in good condition. A well-maintained roadway helps to avoid accidents, to improve driving comfort, as well as to reduce fuel consumption.
At Sacyr Concesiones we are continuously looking for new ways to reduce our impact on the environment. For this reason, we paved two sections of the Aunor Highway and the Eresma Highway with warm mix asphalt thanks to BioRoad, an eco-friendly additive.
This combination has multiple benefits. On the one hand, warm mix asphalt is manufactured at temperatures around 25 to 30 oC lower than conventional mixes. During its fabrication less fuel is needed to heat the mineral aggregate and less carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are produced. Moreover, this decrease of temperature involves less oxidation of the bitumen, so it increases its durability. At the same time, it also leads to an improvement in workers' comfort during the paving.
On the other hand, the use of warm mix asphalt would not be possible without additives that facilitate the asphalting and allow to achieve the optimum compaction. In this case, what makes BioRoad different is that it is composed of olive oil wastewater, graphene, and other recycled oils. Therefore, it accomplishes the challenge of giving a second use to olive oil wastewater, which is difficult to get rid of since it is very polluting for water and soil.
With this initiative we implement an asphalt mix manufactured generating less emissions and contributing to reuse residues. In addition, using it on several sections of our highway P3s helps us to evaluate their behavior with regard to future roadway paving.
BioRoad is an example of some of the measures that we are introducing to create a more sustainable pavement, such as the use of RARx additive or reclaimed asphalt pavement.
