Recovery of the degraded Canal del Dique ecosystems

This asset focuses on the environmental restoration of Canal del Dique, in the Magdalena River (Colombia), crossing the departments of Atlántico, Bolívar and Sucre. Furthermore, the project will also recover the connections with the swamps through hydraulic works. With an area of influence of approximately 435,000 hectares, this project will benefit around 1.5 million inhabitants of the area. It constitutes a challenging opportunity for the promotion of sustainable projects.

Through socio-environmental principles, our team will have different goals during the life cycle of the project:

  • Enhancing the resilience of local ecosystems to better withstand the impacts of climate change, ensuring their long-term sustainability.
  • Assuring the hydraulics’ resources and the navigability of the river course.
  • Control of flows, flooding and saline intrusion with a system of locks, dams and gates.
  • Actively involving local communities in the planning and implementation processes so that their needs and concerns are adequately addressed.

Apart from the environmental and systemic values, the project contemplates a social investment of 67 million euros (340,000 million of Colombian pesos), which will include the promotion of productive projects, environmental education, community strengthening, the development of the communities and job creation
