Ontario Science Centre

Sacyr secured its first concession in Canada, one of the most emblematic projects in the city of Toronto. The project encompasses the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the new Ontario Science Centre, located on the shores of Lake Ontario.

In addition, several heritage assets will be renovated. These include the iconic Cinesphere dome, which will continue to host film screenings, and the Pods, elevated modular pavilions over the lake whose distinctive design dates back to the 1970s.

The project will be delivered in accordance with sustainability criteria, including energy performance optimization and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. It also features an innovative financing structure, pioneering in Ontario, based on a DBFM Semi-Wide Equity model. This approach combines debt financing during construction with a substantial equity contribution throughout the operational phase, providing greater strategic flexibility for the public authority while optimizing financing costs over the life of the concession.

The new museum will replace the former Ontario Science Centre, inaugurated in 1969 and recognized as one of the first science museums in the world to incorporate interactive experiences. The renewed cultural venue will build on this legacy while expanding its educational programming through a science-based approach. Its objective is to position the Ontario Science Centre as one of Canada’s leading science engagement and learning destinations.

Its distinctive architecture and prime location will make it a new landmark and point of reference for the Canadian city. As a result, it will contribute to the revitalization of the surrounding area, attract students, families and tourists, and generate a positive impact on the local economy.
